Hey guys! Welcome back. Today I wanted to share with you even more about blogging. I wanted to talk to you about some of the things you may not know and provide you with some questions to think about before you decide to start. This will help you start on the right foot and know that you are going down the right path. So today I am going to share with you what you really need to know about blogging and provide you with questions that I suggest thinking about before starting a blog.

1. Anyone can start a blog, but not everyone should.

It’s true that anyone with a computer can start a blog. However, just because you can do something doesn’t always mean that you should. It’s easy and free to start a blog and that’s why so many people do it. But what ends up happening is the excitement wears off and your blog is left out there not being updated and not being used. So if you really want to start a blog, make sure you are doing it because you have a passion and drive to keep doing it.

2. Good writing is critical.

When it comes to blogging, you don’t necessarily have to be perfect when it comes to writing. In fact, there are a lot of rules you break. But you still have to be a good writer. You need to know basic punctuation, how to have structure and flow, and how to organize your writing. You need to know how to come up with a process that allows you to come up with consistent ideas and actually write them out.

3. Blogging takes a lot of time.

If you want to be a serious blogger, you should know that blogging takes more than just posting a blog post once a week. You have to brainstorm, create outlines, write, edit, create/take pictures, respond to readers and followers, promote your content, and so much more. It takes a lot more time than people typically think. Having a blog is not a one and done situation.

4. Deciding what to write about can be challenging.

When it comes to blogging, your niche is important. It will help you stay focused and help your audience know what you are writing about. But your niche kind of traps you. Once you enter into something, it’s difficult to deviate from that because your readers will have certain expectations. So when you start a blog, figuring out what you are going to write about is a challenge and it’s usually when people run out of ideas that they stop blogging and never come back.

5. People aren’t always nice.

I have not really run into this on my blog, but I have noticed it on other bloggers and heard bloggers talk about it. Sometimes when people comment, it is not the nicest. People can be hurtful because they are just writing something. They aren’t thinking about how it might affect the person reading it. My method of handling this is to always be authentic. Never respond to anyone in a nasty way just based on how you feel in that moment. Let the comment or email go and just move on.

6. To grow, you have to know how to market your blog.

Promoting your own content is strange at first. It’s not an easy task. However, if you want to grow, you have to learn to be comfortable with promoting your content and talking to people about what you do. That’s really the only way you can grow at a faster speed. If you are looking to grow, social media is important. Don’t sleep on connecting with your readers and followers. My first year of blogging I was not on social media and I only grew to around 200 followers. My second year I became more active on social media and I grew to 900.

7. You won’t make money right away.

A lot of people start blogging because they assume they can make money off it. And you can, but usually not right away. Most people don’t make a lot of money their first year of blogging. There is a lot of time and work that goes into blogging and it doesn’t happen overnight for most people. So you can’t go into it with the expectation of being able to quit your job and just blog.

8. Blogging isn’t easy, but it’s worth it.

Nothing about blogging is easy, but I promise if you start a blog and put in the work, it is completely worth it. Blogging is stressful and at times really difficult. It takes a lot of time and effort before you start seeing real results. Sometimes it feels like what you are doing doesn’t really mean much. But then you get to a point where you really start to get to know your audience and you see how great it is. You see the impact you are having and you realize that you really do love it. So don’t give up.

And now for the questions…

1. Do I really want to start a blog or does it just seem like a “cool” hobby?

2. Do I jump into a new thing and just as quickly quit?

3. What can I do to hold myself accountable to blogging?

4. Do I have my own style and voice?

5. Do I understand spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation?

6. Do I have the time to invest in blogging?

7. What is my standard of excellence?

8. Do I know what I want to write about?

9. What are my core truths and values that I want to build my writing on?

10. How will I handle ugliness and criticism when it comes up?

11. Will I delete hateful comments and emails or will I respond to them?

12. What do I know about marketing my blog?

13. Do I know my target audience?

14. Do I know when I will publish new posts?

15. How can I best promote my blog?

16. What do I need to learn about marketing and promoting my blog and it’s content?

17. Am I blogging to share my story and knowledge or to make money?

18. How long am I willing to stick to my blog even if I’m not making money?

19. Have I researched the best ways to make money from my blog either now or in the future?

20. Does it make sense for me to start a blog?

21. Do I have the time and energy to keep my blog afloat?

22. Am I willing to do what it takes to grow and learn about blogging?

These are the truths about blogging and questions to ask yourself before you start that I wanted to share. Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed this. Please like it if you did. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions. Don’t forget to follow before you leave if you have not already and I hope to see you next time!
