Hey guys! Welcome back. One of the biggest questions I get asked is how to make major life decisions. From choosing a college major to making a career change, there are so many life decisions that have to be made. So how do you do it? Well, today I wanted to share my process for making big life decisions. This is generally the guide that I use when it comes to making a definite decision.

Get clear on the big decision.

It is probably pretty obvious what the big life decision that you need to make is. But it is important to make sure that it is clear. Write it down. Once it is written down, you know it’s going to stick and you are confirming that it is something that is important to you.

Face your fears.

The first step was pretty simple. This one is a little more difficult. Now that you know what the big decision is, it’s time to take control of whatever is holding you back from making that decision. Because more often than not, it is fear that is holding you back and nothing else.

Sometimes we hold ourselves back because we think we need more time or money. But really it’s just the fear of the unknown that really keeps us from just making the decision. But the truth is, you will never fully be ready. You can have all the facts, but if you’re not over the fear, it won’t happen.

Being scared of failure is a pretty common reason that most people put off making decisions. It’s scary, I will admit it. But if no one did anything because they were scared, nothing would ever get done. So I challenge you to figure out what fear is keeping you from making a decision and face it.

Lay out the options.

Now that you know what you are working with and you have overcome the fears holding you back, you can start figuring out where to go from there. There is truly nothing like a pro/con list. Starting writing out all of the options for your decision and deciding where you stand with each one of them.

List all of the advantages of all of the options and see which ones stick out to you more. And make sure the fear isn’t creeping back in. Try to avoid overthinking things and just let your heart and mind lead you. Listen to yourself and make sure you are doing what you truly want.

Listen to your gut.

The truth is, you probably already know what you want. So take that into consideration. It’s okay to listen to yourself when making these big life decisions. Because guess what? You are the one who has to live your life. No one is going to do it for you. So whether it has to do with moving for a job or getting out of a relationship, listen to what your gut is telling you.

So don’t think about having to justify it to anyone. Don’t think about all the reasons you are too scared to do it. Listen to your gut and what it is telling you. Don’t let anyone control it but you. Make sure that you at least list that as an option because what you want is valid, regardless of what anyone else thinks.

Set a deadline.

I know when it comes to making decisions that are difficult, I often keep putting them off. So I know I need to set deadlines to have something figured out, otherwise it may never happen. I know the longer I wait, the harder it will be. So I always give myself a time frame so I know things will get done.

I used to think the longer I took making a decision the more I would understand. I also believed that if I took longer, that people would question it less. But that’s not true. We don’t necessarily have to spend a long time thinking about something. If you know what you want, then there is no point in putting it off.

Make a strong decision.

I know from experience that when it comes to making big life decisions that sometimes I want to change my mind or second guess myself. But I have gained nothing from doing that. So I have learned the importance of being firm in my decisions and not trying to get out of it.

Indecision will always be at the forefront if you allow it to be. Commit to the decisions you make and understand what you are getting yourself into. It is important to weigh all of your options so that you know exactly what you are getting when you make a decision. This way you can stay firm and content with your choices.
