Hey guys! Welcome back. It was recently requested that I do more bullet journal posts, so I am here today to deliver on that request. I wanted to share with you how you can start a bullet journal this year if you have never done one. And I know it’s the middle of month, but trust me when I say, it’s never too late. So here are my tips on how to start a bullet journal this year.

Pick a good journal.

It all starts with having a good journal. Just like choosing a planner, you need to find one that you love because you will actually use it. If you get the cheapest one just for the sake of it you aren’t likely to use it. Pick the one that speaks to you and the one you will enjoy using because that it the one you will get the most out of. It does you no good to buy a journal that will never get used.

Don’t buy all the supplies.

When you start following influencers who are talking about bullet journals and what they use, you might feel the need to buy all of those things. But you really don’t need to. What you should grab are all the things you know you will use. Pens, a ruler, maybe some stickers. Buy the things that you love and that will help you. Your experience and methods won’t always be the same as everyone else’s.

Know your why.

When it comes to starting a bullet journal and staying on top of it, it is extremely important to know why you want to. Without having a reason that keeps you motivated, you might lose the desire and then you wasted all the money buying the stuff and all the time setting it up. So before you commit to everything, figure out why you are doing it and what you hope to get from it.

Just start.

It can be intimidating if you have never had a bullet journal before and you just don’t know where to start. Believe me, it can be scary. However, my best advice for you is to just start. Start with the very first page. Include a quote, draw a picture, make a key. Do whatever you want to fill that space because it’s a starting point and it’s going to motivate you to keep going. Trust me on this one.

Have a system.

This is where you might need a little help from others who have bullet journals. It is really important to have a system so you can stay organized. The good news is you can have whatever system that works for you. But to get started, it might help to draw inspiration from others and see what works for you. This will help you figure out your own system so you’re not trying to figure it out on your own.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

I can’t tell you how many times I have made mistakes in my bullet journal. It happens more than I care to admit and it is a struggle. But that doesn’t mean the game is over. That’s where the stickers, stamps, and pictures come into play. That’s where you get creative and figure out how to fix it. Don’t be afraid to mess up because even the most experienced person makes mistakes.

Hey Samantha! Thank you for this helpful post!

Starting is one thing, but to keep going can be much harder speaking from my own experiences.

I went to some of the most popular bullet journal blog owners and I asked them what is their #1 tip for people who will start a new bullet journal for 2020.

Interestingly, they made almost the same points you made in this post.

In your post, you pointed out that everyone who uses a bullet journal can and probably will make mistakes. And you also said that’s when we use stickers, stamps, and other stuff to fix those mistakes.
You also pointed out sometimes you just need to start and see how it works.

These and some of the other points are really similar to the answers of those people who participated in my round-up post.

I would love to know what you think about it. If that is okay 🙂
