Hey guys! Welcome back. I started getting really into makeup about three or four years ago. It all started when I got on YouTube and started watching makeup tutorials and following beauty gurus. I got really drawn in by all the people I was watching and I became obsessed with not only watching the videos, but also with makeup itself. I grew to absolutely love makeup, and I still do. That being said, today I wanted to share how watching the makeup tutorials and beauty gurus helps you, but it can also hurt you in some ways.

So when I started watching these videos I knew pretty much nothing about makeup. I had some like foundation, powder, an eyeshadow palette, an eyeliner, mascara, and a couple of lipsticks. It all fit in this little bag. It wasn’t much and other than the basics I really didn’t know much. I didn’t go exploring at stores looking at all the makeup. I just stuck to what I knew. So obviously when I started watching makeup tutorials and other videos on YouTube, they had an effect on me.

Watching these videos did help me in a lot of ways. I learned more about makeup and how to apply it the right way. I learned how to make it look good from more natural makeup to more intense makeup. Learning how to do makeup became a hobby and something I have grown to be really good at. So watching these videos was obviously helpful in that way.

However, it also helped me learn to take better care of my skin. Most beauty YouTubers don’t just talk about the makeup, they also talk about skin care and how they take care of their skin. Before that I wasn’t really taking very good care of my skin. I didn’t moisturize or exfoliate or anything like that. So watching these videos helped me not only learn the importance of taking care of my skin, but also how to do it properly. And now my skin looks and feels so much better.

Learning how to do makeup and take better care of my skin helped my confidence and self-esteem quite a bit. I went from being super dry and not wearing a lot of makeup to being able to do a full face. And while I don’t wear makeup everyday, when I do I am able to do it and feel really good about. Before I wasn’t very good and didn’t know anything about it. But being able to learn gave me a new passion and a new hobby.

However, these makeup videos also hurt me in some ways. Not physically (except for the times I used products that my skin didn’t really love), but they hurt me in other ways. One of those ways thinking I needed to buy new products every time they came out. I went from having a few products to have more makeup than I knew what to do with. This hurt financially, but also took up so much space in my room. I started to realize that I didn’t need all that makeup and that I didn’t need to buy new products all the time. And now my makeup collection has dropped quite a bit. I still have a lot, but I’m not adding to it as much as I used to.

Another way it hurt me was it made me think that my makeup had to look perfect all the time. They always talk about how products needed to be super flawless in order to be good and everything had to be super intense. So I didn’t think I could wear more natural products and still feel good about myself. But I started to realize that they were in a room with a ton of lighting and all the things they could ever need to make their skin look super flawless. And I don’t need products that are super intense for an everyday makeup look. And that is why to this day I don’t have a ton of high end makeup products. Because I know I don’t need to spend a ton of money on a product if there are more affordable products that I really love.

So these makeup tutorials helped me in a lot of ways, but they also hurt me in some ways as well. And I do still watch them, but I am more mindful now that I don’t need to go out and buy every product that they recommend. I only buy what I want and what I need. And hopefully this helps you if you feel the same pressures that I felt. Hopefully you see that you don’t need everything they talk about and that your skin doesn’t have to look like theirs for you to look good.

Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed this. Please like it if you did. Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Don’t forget to follow before you leave if you have not already and I hope to see you next time!

Definitely hurts. I have dyspraxia, so doing makeup is very difficult no matter how many tutorials I watch
