Does your life ever feel stagnant? Do you fall too far into your comfort zone that you’re not open to new experiences? After a while of being in the same patterns, you might realize that you need to change things up. Well, I’m here to help you!

Here are my best tips and tricks for getting out of your comfort zone:


1. Apply for that job you want but never think you’ll get


Often, we hold ourselves back from the things we really want simply due to fear. We underestimate our abilities because it’s easier to stay where you are than to be afraid of failing. I won’t lie, fear is hard to break down. A great step in that direction is applying for that dream job or that new career path or that promotion you’d really like. It’ll lead you in the direction of possessing more self-confidence. Nothing may come of the job application, but putting yourself out there creates a mindset of pursuing what you really want.


2. Try something new every other week


There is so much more in this world than the things you’re used to. If you want to get out of a rut, you need to open yourself up to the idea of trying something different. Create a schedule. Every two weeks, find a new experience, activity, food, etc. It doesn’t have to be anything big. Never painted before? Paint a canvas. Looked at that taco shop every time you pass by? Set aside time to actually go in. That one genre of book you’ve avoided? Check a book out from the library in that genre. You get the idea!


3. Make more eye contact


Lots of us struggle to make eye contact. It is uncomfortable and terrifying. If you feel the same way, make an active effort to make eye contact with anyone you’re talking to. This will let you read their expressions, show attention, and potentially give you deeper emotional connections.


4. Go to a thrift store and try on clothes or accessories from a different style


Wearing a different style will provide you with a new perspective. This isn’t about buying anything. You could try things on and discover that you hate a specific style. There’s also a chance you find something new that you never expected to love. Hey, I never thought I’d like infinity scarves until my sister gave me one. Now, they are my favorite winter accessory. Basically, the idea is to shift into an unfamiliar situation.


5. Start therapy


I will start this one out by saying that I used to hate therapy because I had a string of bad therapists. I understand the hesitancy. All it took was finding the right match for me to start changing my entire perspective on the subject. (Plus, studying Psychology in university helped too.) Going to therapy when you’re struggling with any emotions should be as normal as going to a doctor when you have a sinus infection. Therapy challenges you to confront your biases, your traumas, and mental constructs. When you accept the process of therapy, it really helps you grow as a person.


6. Say yes for a whole day


Too often, we automatically say no to invitations and opportunities. Change it up, and say yes for a whole day. Okay. Within reason. Don’t say yes to anything drastic or permanent. But saying yes to going out after work, when you’d usually say no, is the first step to changing up your routine. Going out to dinner with a friend, when you’d usually stay in, is a chance to do something out of the ordinary. Open yourself up to saying yes.


7. Watch a foreign movie (if you don’t normally do so)


There are many great films that are quickly brushed off because they’re created in a different country. Foreign movies give you a glimpse into a different culture, a different language, and a different perspective than your own. This weekend, turn on a foreign movie and watch the whole thing uninterrupted. No phone. No pausing. Just absorb the experience.

The overarching theme with all these suggestions is to break your patterns. Add a little variation to your life when you can. There is so much in the world beyond what you’d expect.
