I have been through a lot in my life. I’ve lost more people than most ever do. I’ve been lied to, abused, forgotten. I’ve gone through trials and pains that people twice my age have never experienced (which I won’t go into further detail on right now). It’s hard to acknowledge that.

My life journey did one good thing though; it taught me personal truths that I thoroughly believe and choose to live by. I’m writing this article to share with you lovely readers a bit more insight into my perspective on the world. I’m also writing this article so that I can read it back whenever I lose my grasp on who I am.

Without further ado, here are 25 personal truths I live by:

  1. People are not disposable.
  2. We teach others how to treat us.
  3. I’d rather be honest and disliked than pretend to be someone I’m not.
  4. Trauma and pain don’t make you stronger. That is simply when resiliency shines through.
  5. Children aren’t born with hatred in their hearts.
  6. We are not our greatest mistakes.
  7. People don’t change until and unless they are ready.
  8. Everybody is allowed to have bad days and bad moods, but that doesn’t excuse taking it out on others.
  9. I can learn something from every single person in the world.
  10. There are many important forms of intelligence, not just book smarts.
  11. Nobody is responsible for another person’s emotions.
  12. Divorce isn’t failure. It is the end of a successful relationship with a limited time span.
  13. Forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting.
  14. It’s okay to say, “I don’t know.”
  15. We can’t please everyone.
  16. You are not responsible for your trauma, but the only way to stop trauma from passing onto the next generation is active healing.
  17. Consent is MANDATORY.
  18. Don’t ever forget how to feel wonder and excitement.
  19. A brave person feels fear but perseveres in spite of it.
  20. Mental health matters just as much as physical health.
  21. Things only matter if we assign them value.
  22. There is no one path that leads people to where they need to be.
  23. DNA doesn’t make a family. Family is who you choose and who chooses you. It is the ones who accept you. It’s the individuals who help you when they have the resources and ability; then you reciprocate whenever possible. It is the people who lift you up and help you become the best version of yourself.
  24. Laughing at ourselves helps up recognize mistakes and grow from them.
  25. No one else can tell you who you are.

These truths are central to my identity, my actions, and my heart. Some of these lessons are happy and others are rather grim. That’s just life though. We all have a mix of the good, the bad, and the gray area in between. I’m content knowing that. I hope you are too.

I often ask questions at the end of my articles to get you thinking. I’ve decided to make this a weekly thing. I’m going to give you a prompt at least once a week. You can write about it for yourself or you can share it with us in the comments below.

This week’s prompt question: What important personal truths do you live by?
