Hey guys! Welcome back. Over the past few months I have been trying to work on my mental health and overcome some of the struggles that I have been having. I have tried to be as open as possible about my mental health journey and today I wanted to talk about it some more. I want to share how I am managing my mental health and what I am doing to be stronger and feel better about myself.
Trying to keep a consistent sleep schedule.
I am a night owl. I always have been. But I have really been trying to make sure I am getting to bed at a decent time, sleeping for seven to eight hours, and waking up around the same time. This helps me because sleep really helps me a lot. Without getting enough sleep I struggle more with my depression and anxiety. So making sure I stick to a consistent sleep schedule helps me make sure I get enough rest. I also like having a routine because it helps me not have to worry about as many things.
Holding myself accountable to social goals.
I am not a super social butterfly. I am extremely introverted and tend to avoid people as much as I can. And you would think pushing myself to be more social would negatively impact my mental health, but it’s actually the exact opposite. For the past few months I have been prioritizing building better relationships and getting better at communicating. The more I open up and try to trust others, the less of a weight and burden I feel in my mind and my heart.
Getting more exercise.
I learned a couple of years ago that my physical health really does affect my mental health. So when trying to take care of my mental health, I also have to make sure I am taking care of my physical health. One of the ways that I do that is by making sure I am getting plenty of exercise. Do I do formal 30 minute workouts every single day? Absolutely not. But I do try to get in some form of exercise everyday, even if it’s just a fun Zumba dance or something like that.
Celebrating all my victories.
I am not always great at acknowledging the things that I do well. I tend to focus more on the negative and the things I don’t do. But I really wanted to change that and be more positive. So I started a list of things that I accomplish both big and small. I try to keep up with it as much as possible because it reminds me of the things I am succeeding and thriving at and keeps me looking more at the positive than the negative. It’s a great way for me to remember all the good I am doing.
Giving myself permission to fail.
I have learned that I can’t be perfect at everything. Not everything I try I will succeed at. So I have had to learn to give myself permission to fail, but still get back up. It’s important that I know it’s okay to not be great at everything. I just have to keep trying and focus on the things that I am good at. But I don’t have to be afraid of failure or not being great at something because I’m not expected to be good at everything. I just have to focus on what I am good at.
