Hey guys! Welcome back. Depression and anxiety really suck and having to live with both on a daily basis can make life really difficult sometimes. And there are times when the smallest things trigger one or the other and my mind just can’t take it. So today I wanted to share some things that happen when I feel triggered and my emotions take over in a very negative way.

1. I suddenly go silent.

This is a very real thing that happens in my real life. I just go silent. I don’t talk to anyone. I don’t interact with people online as much. I really just shut down. And this can be very difficult for people who don’t understand the anxiety and depression I deal with to be able to understand. But sometimes my mind goes to a very dark place and being social is just not something that I am capable of doing in those moments.

2. I appear to be tense.

People often point out that I look tense and that usually has to do with the fact that something has happened or someone has said something that is very triggering. And I don’t often act on my anger so I have to hold it in. And that causes my tension. I also get very anxious when someone says something negative, makes a lot of loud noises, or when I am in large groups of people for very long.

3. I get distracted and zone out.

I zone out and “daydream” a lot. I call it daydreaming, but most of the time it is just me thinking of situations that haven’t happened or situations that have happened that I make worse by talking about them. And sometimes I am daydreaming. I zone out thinking of being someone else, somewhere else, doing something else. And when my depression or anxiety take over, that is how I cope.

4. I put up walls and become defensive.

This is one of my least favorite things about myself. I get so defensive about everything. I think I get it from my parents though, especially my mom. She was always so defensive about everything. But when someone says or does something that triggers me I put up walls and kind of just shut everything and everyone out. It’s a real problem that I am still working on in therapy.

5. I engage in nervous habits.

When I start getting anxious I pick at my nails, I pull at my eyebrows, and just about anything else that I can pick at when I am feeling nervous or any other kind of anxious feeling. I have always done it and it’s often not even something I realize I’m doing until someone points it out (or I look in the mirror and realize my eyebrows are all messed up). But they just happen and they help me deal with my anxiety in my own way.
