Hey guys! Welcome back. I hope you are enjoying your week so far. Today I am here to share with you some advice if you are, like me, trying to navigate your early twenties and what is possibly a new chapter in your life. And since I am still in my early twenties and trying to navigate life myself, I am what I like to call “A Work In Progress”. That being said, I do still have some things that I have learned that might just be useful to you. So hopefully you find something here that you can carry with you at least through these next few years. And I hope that this inspires you in some way to chase your dreams and find that life you are looking for, regardless of what it might be. So here are some things I have learned that will hopefully help you in some way.
Take the risk.
I know you know what I’m talking about. That risk. The one that’s in the back of your head. The one that instantly came to mind when I said “take the risk”. That’s the risk you should take now. Because if you don’t, you may not get another opportunity. No matter how crazy it seems to other people or how many people are telling you that you can’t do or you shouldn’t do it, you should absolutely go do it. Now is your chance. Now is the best time for you to be selfish because you don’t have anyone else depending on you. Unless of course you are married or have kids. If not, there shouldn’t be anyone holding you back.
You don’t have to have your dream job right away.
Now in regards to what I just said, taking a risk does not mean being irresponsible or not worrying about anything. You should definitely get a job. Even if it’s a job that only pays $12 an hour and it’s not something you are fully invested in. It will pay the bills and you will get experience from that. But use it as a step in the ladder. You don’t have to keep the job forever. Right now, you just need to focus on how you will get by while you are trying to figure out what your dream is and how you’re going to get there. The job you take now doesn’t have to be your forever job. It just needs to keep you going until you get there.
Focus on the journey, not the destination.
When I think about my dreams and what I want to do, I often find myself getting caught up in what my life will be like when I get there. I sometimes forget to think about the fact that I am already living in it. I am already doing what I want to do. I just have to do other things in the process to keep me going. But that doesn’t take away from the value of what I am doing or the fact that I get to help people every single day. So while you are working and dreaming about your life, make sure you are remembering that where you are right now is a part of your journey and it’s an important part. Don’t forget to live in the moment sometimes.
The answers will come.
We all question what we should be doing with our lives, who we will end up with, and where we will end up in life. I question these things all the time. Sometimes I get really impatient waiting for the perfect career, the perfect person, and the perfect place to just make sense. But I have learned over time that we don’t always get the answers we want when we want them. More often than not they show up right when we least expect them to. And sometimes they are the things that we have been fighting off for a long time. So sometimes you just have to stop and pay attention to what’s in front of you.
You don’t owe anyone an explanation.
Right now in your life, if you are single, you don’t really owe anyone an explanation as to why you are doing the things you are doing. And if anyone is trying to tear down your dreams, goals, or ideas, they aren’t really the kinds of people you want to be taking advice from anyway. So don’t try to justify your dreams to people because they aren’t going to be listening. They aren’t going to care about why you think a certain way or why you want to do something. They just want to bring you down. The supportive people in your life may have questions, but they will never make you feel bad for wanting to do something, even if they don’t understand it.
Now is your chance. Now is the perfect time. You don’t need anyone’s permission. You don’t need anyone’s validation. It’s time to get started on whatever it is you want to do, even if you aren’t really making a ton of money from it right off the bat. It will take even longer to make into a career if you wait to get started. So start now. Don’t wait for the “perfect time” because that doesn’t exist. We don’t have yesterday because it’s gone. We don’t have tomorrow because tomorrow never gets here. All we have is today. So take advantage of it. Use that time to it’s absolute fullest and just get started. I promise you won’t regret it.
Getting started is great and all, and you absolutely should, but it’s also super important to make sure that once you get started you keep going. Consistency is the key to all growth and progress, so don’t sell yourself short. Show up for yourself like you would show up for anyone else. Believe in yourself and keep moving forward. You are a work in progress, so do the work to make sure that you continue to see progress, even if sometimes it’s only a little. It will be worth it in the end. It’s easy to get frustrated and want to give up. But you won’t make your dreams happen that way. So just keep going.
