Millennials and Gen-Zers inherited a myriad of social, political, and environmental problems that we never asked for. We’re coping with gun violence, wildfires, global warming, a global pandemic, and an increasingly dystopian world. Many of us feel angry and ignored. Capitalism and big businesses don’t care about us, treating us as dispensable. Our voices are silenced and infantilized. We are gaslit and blamed for problems created by older generations. As a millennial, I’ve felt this way most of my life. I know it isn’t just me though. Many millennials carry around this heavy burden. Now, Gen-Zers are inheriting this mess too.

If you feel disenfranchised, unseen, or unheard, Newsies is a phenomenal Broadway production for you to watch. (And good news, a stage recording is currently available on Disney+.) Newsies tells a fictionalized version of the very real Newsboy Strike of 1899 that occurred in New York City, Troy, Rochester, Fall River, and Providence. The newsies (children tasked with selling newspapers) refused to stand by and let William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer take advantage of them. They demanded their voice be heard and be respected. (Read more about it here.)

The newsies of 1899 taught us how to stand up against the mess of the status quo. If you’re needing some inspiration and fuel to get you to the polls for voting or out to the protests you care about, here are 12 phenomenal Newsies quotes that fuel the fighter in all of us:

  1.  “Behold the brave battalion that stands side by side

Too few in number and too proud to hide

Then say to the others who did not follow through

You’re still our brothers, and we will fight for you”

  1. “They think they’re running this town but this town will shut down without us”
  1. “Now is the time to seize the day.”
  1. “Just look around at the world we’re inheriting

And think of the one we’ll create

Their mistake is they got old, that is not a mistake we’ll be making

No sir, we’ll stay young forever!”

  1. “Where does it say you gotta live and die here?”
  1. “Try to walk all over us; we’ll stomp all over you.”
  1. “Being boss doesn’t mean you have all the answers, just the brains to recognize the right one when you hear it.”
  1. “Keep your eyes on the stars and your feet on the ground. You can do this.”
  1. “We been keepin’ score

Either they gives us our rights or we gives them a war

We’ve been down too long

And we paid our dues

The things we do today will be tomorrow’s news.”

  1. “I can’t spend my whole life dreaming, though I know that’s all I seem inclined to do.”
  1. “We’re done being treated like kids. From now on, they will treat us as equals.”
  1. “Once and for all, we won’t carry no banners that don’t spell, “Freedom!”

Fin’lly we’se raisin’ the stakes, this time whatever it takes,

This time the union awakes once and for all.”

I hope these quotes help give you the drive to get involved in your community. Protest. Talk about problems. Write to government officials. Fundraise for causes you believe in. AND, GO VOTE! (I’m not telling you who or what to vote for; however, I am asking that if you have the legal right and the ability, please perform your civic duty and vote.) People depending on the status quo want us to believe we are powerless and that our vote doesn’t matter. But, we’re more powerful than we realize.

I hope you enjoyed this article. Share this with anybody else who might need some voting motivation. Thanks!
(Reminder that same-day voter registration is available in the following US states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.)
