Hey guys! Welcome back. I think a lot of times when we think of healthy habits we automatically turn to physical health and that is a big part of it. However, there are some habits that are important for our mental and emotional health and that is what I want to talk about today. I wanted to share some of the habits that are important to me and that I do my best to incorporate so I can take care of myself physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Drink water.

This is one of the most obvious and one that I talk about a lot, but I know how important it is and I also know that sometimes we just need a reminder. Drinking water has many benefits, not only physically, but also with boosting our mood and helping us stay motivated. I try to drink a lot of water during the day and I really like to start my morning off with some water. It makes me feel a lot better.

Daily movement.

I used to think that I had to do a full workout everyday and to be quite honest it kind of discouraged me because there are days when I just don’t really feel like doing a whole workout. But one thing that has really helped me is not feeling like I had to do a whole thing. Any movement is better than no movement, so no matter what I try to do something everyday that gets me moving and is something.

Self care.

Self care is really important in a lot of ways and it’s a habit that helps physically, mentally, and emotionally. Self care to you may look different than what it looks like to me or anyone else, but that’s the beauty of it. Self care is you taking care of yourself and you decide what that looks like. You decide what helps you and what makes you feel good. It’s also up to you to do those things.

Listen to your body.

Eat when you feel hungry. Rest when you are tired. Move when you have energy. Drink when you are thirsty. Listen to your body because it will tell you what it needs. Often times we feel as though we are off balance and can’t figure out why. All the while our body is telling us and we just aren’t listening. So start taking some time to just be still and let your body tell you what it needs. And then do it.

Sleep.

I cannot stress how important sleep is. It’s one of the most basic needs that we have, along with food and water. Not getting enough sleep does more damage that sleeping does. Sleeping helps more than anything you could do when you’re awake. So trust me when I say just go to sleep. Whatever you are trying to do will still be there tomorrow, but if you are feeling tired or sleepy, just sleep.

Cook more.

Find things you love to cook, recipes you want to try, or new ideas for recipes you already have and spend more time cooking. I love cooking and it’s honestly become one of my favorite things. I love trying new things and really just exploring different foods. I think it’s really fun and it’s a great way to be creative and just enjoy myself. It helps me find new foods that I like and learn new things.

Set boundaries.

Boundaries are important for many reasons, but it’s really important because it helps you protect yourself emotionally. Sometimes the people in your life won’t understand or necessarily agree with your boundaries, but they are important. It’s important that you put boundaries in place that make sense for you and help you keep out any negativity that you don’t want to have as a constant in your life.

Practice gratitude.

If you have been around for a while you know that gratitude has become such a huge part of my life. I strive everyday to remember everything that I have to be grateful for and everything I am blessed to have. It’s not something I am perfect at because I definitely still have times where I feel down and think about the negative. But prioritizing gratitude has helped me so much and I have become much more positive.

Give yourself something to look forward to.

I have learned when it comes to getting through a tough day or a tough week that it’s really important that I have something at the end of the day or week to look forward to. Whether it’s a movie, a nice bubble bath, or doing something new for myself, I really like to give myself something to look forward to. It helps keep me motivated and keeps me from feeling completely drained when things start to feel hard or I feel overwhelmed.

Find a creative outlet.

My creative outlet is writing. I love getting to share my life, things I love, and things I learn with you guys. It helps me work through my feelings and my thoughts. I love that I get to express myself and just be myself with you guys. But if writing isn’t your thing, there are so many different creative outlets. Just find one that suits you well and that you really enjoy that will help you express yourself and work through things.

Focus on one thing at a time.

I used to believe that multitasking was efficient, but in college I learned that it really isn’t. I learned that the more things you work on at once the longer it takes you to get anything accomplished at all. So I have since learned to focus on just one thing at a time. And once I am finished with that I move on to another. It helps me actually get things done and also keeps me from feeling completely overwhelmed by all the things.

Take breaks.

Breaks are important no matter what you are doing and how you are feeling. It helps you mentally because you are able to step away and think about something else. It helps physically because you can move and do something else for a minute. And it helps you emotionally because you are less likely to feel stressed and overwhelmed. Breaks help in a variety of ways and they are really important.

Read.

This is really good for your mental health because it helps you learn, no matter what you are reading. Even fiction helps you learn because you are expanding your world and opening yourself up. Even if you just read articles it helps you learn new things. Reading is really important and really helpful in a lot of ways. I have always loved reading, but I have learned as an adult just how important it is.

Journal.

I started consistently writing in a journal almost a month ago and it has completely changed my life. I have learned so much about myself and been able to process so much of things I have gone through and what I am feeling. I have seen so many benefits since I started journaling everyday and I can’t recommend it enough. I have prompts that I use everyday, but I think even free writing could be really beneficial.

Feed your soul.

You can’t pour into others if you are empty. So it’s really important for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being that you are feeding your soul. I have been the kind of person to try to fill up everyone else when I was completely drained and it hasn’t gone well. I have learned the importance of taking care of myself first so I can be the best version of myself of other people and it has helped a lot.

These are really good tips, I’m working a lot currently on improving my health and these type of posts are so helpful, i agree on taking care of yourself first and making sure you’re not pouring from an empty glass, I tend to do that quite a bit and put my needs to one side at times for others so it’s definitely something I need to work on.
