Hey guys! Welcome back. I hope you had a great week. Something I struggle with a lot is negative thoughts. I’ve talked about it before but I’ve always really struggled with being optimistic and not dwelling so much on the negative. So I’ve had to do a lot of work recently to eliminate my negative thoughts and be better about thinking more positively and I thought I would share some of the ways I do that with you here today. These are just the ones that work for me and that I find the most helpful but there are plenty of others out there if these don’t work for you.

1. Consciously pay attention to your thoughts.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in negative thinking when you are so used to it. It’s easy to fall back into the mindset when you aren’t actively challenging your thoughts. When I have super negative thoughts I have to remind myself to push forward and challenge the thoughts. It’s not always easy, but it’s necessary because if I’m not paying attention I know the damage I can do to myself and I want to avoid that as much as possible.

2. Keep yourself busy.

My negative thoughts creep in the most when I’m not doing anything. It’s one of the reasons I have a hard time relaxing. I know when I have a lot of time on my hands those negative thoughts are more likely to show up and it never leads to anything good. So I try to keep myself busy. Even if it’s just reading or watching TV. I try to do things that will help distract me from my thoughts and keep the negativity at bay.

3. Know your triggers.

This is a really important one and one that I didn’t really know much about until recently. I didn’t realize that there were things that could trigger my negative thoughts without me even realizing. So I have started working on being able to recognize the things that bring these thoughts and what I can do to avoid them or minimize them. It’s definitely not the easiest thing to do, but it’s so worth it if you can do it.

4. Stay active.

When my hearts not racing my mind is, so staying active definitely helps. And when I feel negative thoughts coming in the best thing I can do to immediately get them to go away is to go do something active. Whether it’s going for a walk, finding a workout class, or just doing something in the apartment that is moving, staying active helps me take my mind off of the negative thoughts and something more present.

5. Decompress.

Stress is another really big thing that can bring negative thoughts. In fact I know for me that when I have a lot of stress or I’m feeling overwhelmed my negative thoughts are worse than any other time. So I really try to make sure I am doing everything I can to keep my stress at a healthy level and taking the time to decompress and relieve tension. It seems simple, but it has such a big impact overall.

6. Get enough rest.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, sleep is so important. It’s something that we sacrifice a lot but something we really shouldn’t be sacrificing at all. Sleep helps our minds and our bodies. It helps us reset and refuel. It’s so important to make sure you are getting enough sleep, but it’s also important to make sure you are getting enough rest. Don’t try to be on the go every second that you are awake. That’s how burnout happens.

7. Practice gratitude.

It’s really hard to be negative or have negative thoughts about the things that you are grateful for. So when you focus on the things you have in your life and the things you are grateful for, you are less likely to have those intrusive, negative thoughts. When you focus on the positive it’s really challenging to turn it into something negative. So when you find yourself having negative thoughts look around and name all the things you are grateful for.

Negative thoughts can be challenging and they never make things easy, so hopefully this helps in some way. Eliminating negative thoughts isn’t easy, but it’s worth it if you can keep them at a minimum. Thank you so much for stopping by! I really hope you enjoyed this. Please like it if you did.
